Shelbyville, Simpsonville and Shelby County Commission on Human Rights
The Shelbyville, Simpsonville and Shelby County Commission on Human Rights (Commission) was created by the City of Shelbyville, City of Simpsonville and Shelby County, Kentucky, governments to eradicate discrimination, to protect all citizens against discrimination and to foster a climate where all people may thrive through communication, education and mediation.
The Shelbyville, Simpsonville and Shelby County Commission on Human Rights has 11 commissioners (board members), four are appointed by the Mayor of the City of Shelbyville, two are appointed by the Mayor of the City of Simpsonville and five are appointed by the Shelby County Judge-Executive. The Commissioners are volunteers and members of the community they serve.
The Commission meets on the first Monday of each month. The meetings begin at 6 p.m. and are open to the public. Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the Commission is holding virtual meetings each month via Zoom. The public is invited to observe the online meetings. Send an email to info@scchr-ky.org by 4 pm on each meeting date to receive information by return email on how to join the 6 pm meeting.
The Commission’s focus is primarily in education and outreach programs to ensure that Shelby County residents know their rights and responsibilities under the Kentucky civil rights laws. If you would like to receive training about fair housing laws, equal employment opportunity laws, sexual harassment or pregnancy laws, please contact the Commission by email at info@scchr-ky.org.
The Shelbyville, Simpsonville and Shelby County Commission on Human Rights hosts community meetings to receive input from the community to further civil rights in Shelby County. It recommends city governments enact civil rights ordinances when needed.
When the Commission receives a complaint about an alleged discrimination, the complaint is referred to the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, which is the state agency responsible for the enforcement of the Kentucky civil rights laws. If you believe you have been discriminated against and want to file a complaint, please contact the Commission by email at info@scchr-ky.org.
